The mission of the Sustainable Communities programs is to educate and empower the current generation of young people in the Capital Region to transform their communities.  To accomplish this mission, The Stakeholders provides the following programs; Sustainable Communities Institute (SCI)and the Sustainable City Project.

The SCI provides a diverse and in-depth experience to young professionals to learn more about what sustainability means and how the contribution of their resources can bring about change in the region.  The SCI educates participants on the various dimensions of sustainability as well as establishes a network of young professionals and members of the creative class committed to the cultivation of a more sustainable Capital Region.

The SCI consists of 5 educational sessions, an opening reception featuring author James Howard Kunstler, a personal sustainability project, and a joint closing reception with the two other Stakeholders Institutes.  Each educational session will highlight one particular aspect of sustainability, including: energy, food, neighborhood and community revitalization, the economy, and how to engage the community in sustainability.  This year, approximately 30 participants will be accepted for the program.

The Sustainable City Project

The Sustainable City Project will be an effort led by the Stakeholders Sustainable Communities Committee as a response to Richard Florida’s local presentation and the “Who’s Your City?” campaign. The goal is to bring all concepts of sustainability into a design project led by a group of creative young professionals in the Capital District, at a small urban scale within local cities. The group will ideally consist of architects, planners, engineers, transportation specialists, developers, and other young professionals interested in studying the relationship between the built environment and its larger surrounding community.
