Albany, N.Y. — New York Governor David A. Paterson has appointed Catherine M. Hedgeman as a member of the New York State Commission on National & Community Service. Hedgeman, 36, is an attorney and owner of the Law Office of Catherine M. Hedgeman in Albany. The Stakeholders Inc. was recently featured in Albany Business Review Talent scouts: Nonprofit has stake in attracting, retaining young professionals in region Kate Hedgeman was searching for ways to keep young professionals in the Capital Region, so she and some friends started a volunteer organization—that people pay to join.
Since The Stakeholders Inc. was founded in 2008, 150 people have paid $150 each to join the nonprofit civic group. The fee comes with a price: Members must also donate time and talent toward the nonprofit’s mission of attracting and retaining a young work force in the area’s cities. “There’s more to this group than just writing a check. It’s centered around civic engagement and volunteerism—not just for the sake of donating time but by creating real change,” said Hedgeman, 36, a private-practice attorney and Stakeholders’ unpaid CEO. As another requirement of membership, each prospect must either complete one of three “institutes” in areas covering young philanthropy, arts and culture, or sustainability, or volunteer through Get on Board, a program that matches members’ talents with volunteer positions. The goal is to eventually collect a pool of professional talent from which nonprofits can draw. Read Full Article (pdf) |
